Rendering of New York Aquarium at 602 Surf Avenue in Coney Island, Brooklyn

As part of its $157 million renovation project, the New York Aquarium in Coney Island, Brooklyn, recently launched construction on a 57,000-square-foot shark exhibit with a coral reef tunnel.

The three-story aquarium building will feature a roof deck, a café and classroom space. Aquarium officials announced plans to break ground in spring 2012, but Hurricane Sandy subsequently delayed renovations by more than a year.

Aquarium visitors will have to wait a bit longer, as the exhibit – to be called “Ocean Wonders: Sharks!” – is slated to open in 2016.

The facility moved to 602 Surf Avenue in Coney Island from Battery Park in 1957. [Gowanus Lounge]Mark Maurer
