A New York City Housing Authority employee and an alleged accomplice were arrested Thursday for allegedly swindling public housing seekers out cash in a fraudulent ploy.
The duo, New York City Housing Authority’s Magnolia Diaz and Benarbe Perez, stand accused of promising to secure public housing in exchange for money. The city Department of Investigation announced their arrests Thursday, alleging that Diaz and Perez scammed victims out of $14,800.
The defendants never provided apartments to their victims and didn’t have any authority to arrange them, investigators told the Associated Press. They are to be charged with grand larceny and scheming to defraud, according to information from the Manhattan district attorney’s office cited by the Associated Press. [AP] — Julie Strickland
